An Odacité Esthetician's Acne Awareness Guide

It's time to let your skin — and your skin concerns — breathe! According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, acne is the most common skin condition in the United States as it affects up to 50 million Americans annually. With so many people on the same skin journey, there is really no need for shame or embarrassment.

Your Odacité team is always here to support you with all the tips, tools and formulas you need to regain confidence in and control of your skin. Here's 5 tips to help keep breakouts at bay, from our Odacité Esthetician, Taylor.

1. Thoroughly remove SPF or makeup before bed.

Leaving makeup on can clog pores, causing excessive dryness and oil overproduction in the skin. Using an oil cleanser helps break down surface build-up from the day. Double cleansing with a micellar water or clarifying cleanser helps to ensure you have a clean canvas before bed.

2. Clean your phone!

According to scientists at the University of Arizona, cell phones can carry ten times more bacteria than most toilet seats. Wiping down your phone a few times a day with antibacterial wipes in between checking notifications helps prevent the spread from your screen to your hands, cheek and jawline.

3. Lighten up your skincare routine.

Using lighter moisturizers like Green Smoothie Quenching Crème during the summer is helpful in preventing breakouts when we’re experiencing higher humidity and body sweat from the rising temperatures.

4. Drink more water.

Skin dehydration will lead to increased oil production which means more breakouts. Staying hydrated is a requirement year-round, but increased sweating in the summertime makes compliance particularly important.

5. Add some Vitamin A and exfoliation to your routine.

Upping up your exfoliation with a hydrating exfoliant like Jojoba Beads and utilizing anything with Vitamin A like CaR Vital Glow can also aid in skin cell turnover, which helps decrease the likelihood of breakouts while also fighting fine lines and wrinkles at the same time.

6. Change your pillowcase every week.

Our skin and hair produce natural oils overnight while we’re sleeping, which can get on your pillow while you sleep. When you mix this with sweat and a night of tossing and turning, you’ve got yourself a formation of potentially acne-causing bacteria! Changing your pillowcase weekly and flipping it nightly can help reduce these breakouts from occurring.

7. Never forget your SPF.

Sunscreen is always important, but especially during the summer. Skin that is exposed to constant UV exposure can dry up, leading your skin to produce excess oils. This domino effect can potentially clog your pores and cause a breakout.
