Ever since we launched Odacité, I have been blown away by the number of emails asking me for the details on how I healed my body from breast cancer. It's humbling to see how many lives have been touched by this devastating illness.
I want to start by saying that I’m not a doctor and while the alternative road has allowed me to heal against all the odds, I’m still under the care of an oncologist, and encourage all of you to get regular check up.
Today I want to share with you what I have discovered through years of research, meeting extraordinary integrative doctors, and my personal healing experience. These are all ways you can help heal your body and prevent the odds of getting breast cancer.
1/ GREEN YOUR PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), each day women expose their body to more that 200 chemicals from personal care products alone! Some of these chemicals are directly linked to breast cancer.
The main concerns are the chemicals that are known as endocrine-disruptors. EWG states “There is no end to the tricks that endocrine-disruptors can play on your bodies: increasing production of certain hormones; decreasing production of others; imitating hormones; turning one hormone into another; interfering with hormone signaling.” Research shows that hormonal imbalance is one of the main triggers of breast cancer. The first place to start greening your life is your bathroom.
Here are the top 3 hormone-disruptors that I suggest you avoid at all cost and that are unfortunately omnipresent in personal care products.
PARABENS: widely used preservatives, found in so many personal care products: skincare, deodorant, makeup, toothpaste, shampoo. The controversy started when a study showed that 9 out of 10 breast cancer tumors contained parabens in them. I highly recommend you make sure all your products are paraben free.
FRAGRANCE: we all love a nice scent. Unfortunately what reads as “fragrance” in the ingredient list often contains a chemical called Phthalates (allows for the scent to last longer). Because the beauty industry considers “fragrance” as a trade secret, ingredients that compose the fragrance do not have to be listed, so Phthalates do not appear on the ingredient list. What to do? Read the labels and avoid products that simply list “fragrance.” I buy fragrance free laundry detergent, switched my perfume to essential oils or natural perfume like Honoré des Prés and only use reputable organic skincare products which are fragrance free, using only essential oils for their extraordinary scents and benefits to the skin
GLYCOL: Propylene glycol is one of the most widely used ingredients in cosmetics and personal care (also found in paint, cleaning products and brake fluids.) Glycols are known to wreck havoc on your hormones, so much so that the European Union says that glycols “may damage fertility or the unborn child.”
2/ EAT LESS ANIMAL PRODUCTS AND CHOOSE ORGANIC WHEN POSSIBLE
New research now scientifically confirm that you can improve your odds of never getting cancer and/or improve your chances of recovering from it by adopting a vegan diet. This research out of Loma Linda University funded by the National Cancer Institute reported that vegans have lower rates of cancer than both meat-eaters and even vegetarians.
Vegan women, for example, had 34 percent lower rates of female-specific cancers such as breast, cervical, and ovarian cancer.
While I chose to adopt a 100% vegan diet to heal, starting with lowering meat and dairy product is great cancer prevention strategy.
Choosing organic food avoids exposure to pesticides and fertilizers that also have hormone disruptive activity on your body. Plus organic food shows to have a higher nutritional value with higher concentration of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which will make your skin absolutely glow.
3/ STAY ACTIVE
Exercise can help lower your risk of breast cancer in several ways. Staying active helps stabilize a healthy weight, alter estrogen metabolism, and promotes lymph flow as well as balances the endocrine system (thus our hormones).
Aerobic exercises are best as they directly change the metabolism of estrogen in our body by increasing the ratio of “good” (2-hydroxyestrone) to the “bad” (16alphy-hydroxyestrone) estrogens. Another good practice is Yoga as it balances and regulates the endocrine system and promotes lymph flow, an extremely important activity for drainage of toxins from the breast and the lymph nodes in the armpit.
4/ SUPPLEMENT VITAMIN D
Most of us are deficient in vitamin D, ask your doctor for the simple blood test that will check your vitamin D level. Vitamin D does not only promote bone growth and bone healing, it has also been suggested as an alternative to estrogen-lowering drugs to reduce breast cancer risk.
If you are deficient, I recommend supplementing daily with a good quality Vitamin D is a great way to help prevent breast cancer. Another great natural way to up you vitamin D level is step outside for up to 10 minutes every single day. When you expose all your skin to the sun, your body will produce the nutrient on its own.
5/ LESS STRESS, MORE BEAUTY SLEEP
Both stress and lack of sleep are the most common culprit causes to many diseases and health issues. In fact stress is known to cause lack of sleep, obesity, blood sugar dysregulation, and increased estrogen production. All of these are leading factors to increase a woman’s breast cancer risk.
If you suffer from stress or chronic sleep issues, practice meditating, yogic breathing exercises, and journaling before going to bed to detoxify the mind.
